Overcoming a Binge

Overcoming a Binge

Many people have an interesting and difficult relationship with food.  As a result, people find themselves fighting weight problems.

Even those who normally eat healthily could find themselves on an eating binge for one reason or another. For some, it is an emotional thing. Something happens that causes stress, sadness, anger, or other severe emotions and they end up overeating.

For other people, they have been dieting for a long time and instead of just enjoying a small meal that strays away from the diet from time to time, they go completely off the wagon and end up binging.

No matter the case, if you find yourself on an eating binge, then you need to know how to overcome it so that it doesn’t continue to be a problem.

Know How to Hit the Pause Button

Most people know when they are going on a binge, and if you do, then this gives you the chance to stop it before it takes control of your life. When you find yourself headed toward a binge or you have the food in front of you, hit the pause button for about a minute.

Let yourself know you aren’t stopping the binge. You are just hitting the pause button. Don’t deny yourself of the foods you are craving. Just pause and get a little more control of your choices. You can eat those foods you crave, but if you slow things down, then you may be able to eat in moderation or even stop entirely instead of going overboard.

Know Your Triggers

Everyone has a trigger that causes them to go on a binge. That trigger could be a type of food they crave, an event in life, or a certain emotion. If you don’t know your trigger, then it could sneak up on you and you can find yourself binging.

Learn your trigger and then, if you need to, avoid it altogether. The more you take charge of your triggers, the more you can keep it from taking control of you.

Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself

You can actually create a vicious cycle if you aren’t careful. You binge and then you get really mad at yourself. This triggers emotions and frustration, so you end up overeating again.

Once you get into this cycle, it is hard to get out.  Don’t get so mad at yourself. Instead, give yourself a break, know that you aren’t perfect, and practice some kindness and patience. This will help you avoid another binge in the future.

Binge eating is a problem for many people, and since it can be triggered by different things, it is a different issue for each individual. However, you can overcome your own binge and ensure you don’t continue dealing with the problem that is very bad for your health. Use the tips above and take a pause for a moment, give yourself a break, and learn your triggers. Doing these things can give you much more power over your mind and body so that you don’t find yourself binging again and again.
