Evidence That an Alkaline pH Diet Benefits Health

Today I will discuss balancing the body’s pH with an alkaline diet as a major step toward your well-being and greater health.

The body continually strives to balance its pH.  Diet is the easiest way to assist the body in this balance. Eating a diet rich in alkaline foods helps the body maintain the alkaline balance it needs. When your body is at an alkalizing state and you’re nourishing it with foods that are healthy your body’s pH is neutral. It’s not acidic and it’s the right pH, which is around 7 in a 0 -14 scale (you can purchase pH-Strips, to monitor my body’s pH).An alkaline-forming diet also boosts the oxygen levels in the blood, making it impossible for bacteria, viruses, yeasts and other pathogens to survive and thrive. When the pH of your body is aligned with the foods you eat then you feel and look healthy.

Processed foods are more acidic than naturally produced foods. When you eat more naturally produced foods and avoid acidic foods your blood is more likely to stay in the right pH zone that is beneficial for your overall health.

Alkaline diets may result in a number of health benefits according to the Journal of Environmental and Public Health:

  1. Increased fruits and vegetables will improve the potassium-to-sodium K/Na ratio and may benefit bone health, reduce muscle wasting, as well as mitigate other chronic diseases such as hypertension and strokes.
  2. The resultant increase in growth hormone with an alkaline diet may improve many outcomes from cardiovascular health to memory and cognition.
  3. An increase in intracellular magnesium, which is required for the function of many enzyme systems, is another added benefit of the alkaline diet. Available magnesium, which is required to activate vitamin D, would result in numerous added benefits in the vitamin D enzyme systems.
  4. Since obesity may be related to acidity in the body, one way to prevent and to fight obesity is to reduce that acidity by eating an alkaline diet.

From the evidence outlined, it would be prudent to consider a balanced alkaline diet to reduce obesity, chronic disease, and mortality that are plaguing our population.

What is an alkaline diet? Simply put an alkaline diet is full of nutrient rich green leafy vegetables, fruits and real whole natural food. Therefore, consider including more fruits and vegetables in your diet and a great way to achieve this is by starting your day off with a lemon water tea and juicing daily.

Here are two strategies I use to keep my body in an alkalized state.

I begin my day with a warm cup of water and the juice of a lemon or some days for variation I add a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar, and tsp. of raw honey to my lemon water. Lemon and ACV are both alkalizing to the body. Outside the body, lemon juice is acidic (pH is below 7) after all it is a citrus fruit. Inside the body however, when lemon juice has been fully metabolized and its minerals are dissociated in the bloodstream, its effect is alkalizing and raises the pH of the blood to above 7.  Similarly, ACV and raw honey have an alkaline effect in our bodies.

Most green juices are alkalizing; therefore drink at least one green juice a day. You can find wonderful recipes at our website juicingdiet.org. Here is one my favorite alkaline green juices.

Alkaline Bliss

 1 cup of spinach or kale

 1/2 cucumber

 2 stalks of celery including leaves

 2 carrots

 1/2 green apple

Below is a basic acid/alkaline food chart to see where certain foods lie on the scale to help you make wise choices. Keeping your body in a state of alkalinity is another great reason to continue juicing or get started if you haven’t! Blessings for wellness and getting your juice on.
