Good Juicing Techniques

Welcome Vida Juicer to Wellness Wednesday!  Today’s topic will be a review of good juicing techniques.  For some of you this will be a definitely a review and for some of you newbies an intro.  Whichever, I know this will help to put your best foot forward when juicing.

Just Juice – Find your best time of day (I like morning and midafternoon), juicing will give you massive amounts of energy.

Use Organic Fruits and Veggies Whenever Possible

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is vital for health and maintenance of your body.  Use the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 shopping list to reduce your exposure to synthetic chemicals that are toxic to your body.  If at times you have to eat conventionally-grown produce (dirty dozen), remember it’s better than not eating fruits and veggies at all.

Drink Green Juice On An Empty Stomach

Juicing on an empty stomach in the morning lets you absorb the full food value of the nutrients.  It allows the vitamins, nutrients and minerals in the juice to go straight to your bloodstream.  This is a very powerful process in letting each cell get the nutrients they need to thrive.  Having a meal already in your stomach prevents your body from quickly absorbing the nutrients from the juice.  The rule of thumb to follow is wait 20 minutes after drinking a green juice to consume a meal and wait at least 2 hours after a meal to drink a green juice.  Lastly, you never drink green juice with a meal.

Go Green

Cumber and or celery are a great starting juice base, very hydrating and alkalizing.  Dark leafy greens contain the most amount of chlorophyll out of all other vegetables. Chlorophyll is the blood of life because all animals and humans obtain their life-sustaining energy supply from plants, making photosynthesis, a source of all life. Without plants there would be no life.  Chlorophyll is both a potent oxygenator and helps alkalize our blood; it thus helps our bodies fight off disease.  This strengthens our immune system, enhancing overall energy levels and wellbeing.  All you need is 2 nice large leafs and cut the bottom stem if too bitter.  If you are looking to alkalize your body and get in really good health start with the greens, “Green on the inside – clean on the inside.”

Perfect Compliments

Leafy greens may be a little harsh/bitter for most people that is why a simple apple, lemon or lime can really cut the grassy taste. Apple also helps engage the gastric enzymes for quicker nutrient uploads.

Don’t Wait Too Long To Drink Your Green Juice

Drink it as soon as you make it because when the juice gets exposed to air the vitamins and minerals start to oxidize in about 15 minutes and its live enzymes begin to degrade.  If you save one for later in the day be sure you store in in an airtight glass container filled to the top (no air gap) in the refrigerator.  Unless you have a press or a slow juicer…then it is okay to keep it longer.

Limit Your Intake of Sweet Fruits

Just as juicing has a quicker absorption rate than smoothies, so too does the sugar from the fruit known as fructose and because it’s fruit sugar, there is such a thing as excess.  You don’t want the amount of sugar and fructose in your diet to go over the top.  If a juice has has too much natural sugar it can affect insulin levels drastically, causing cravings and weight gain.  Remember throughout the day 80% veggies and 20% fruit or no more than 1 serving of sweet fruit or veggie in a green juice.

Rotate Your Leafy Greens

Variety is the spice of life and it’s key for juicing correctly.  Your body gets used to a certain type of green every 4 days. In essence it becomes less effective at absorbing different types of greens.  Rotate your greens (kale, chard, spinach, mustard greens, collards, dandelion, arugula, etc.) in your juice each 4-5 days to prevent this and prevent buildup of oxalic acid (which can affect the thyroid gland) and it provides a balanced amount of different vitamins and minerals for your body.

Chew Your Juice

It may seem funny and weird at first, but juice should be chewed, move your jaw up and down, or swish around in your mouth before swallowing to release saliva that contains important digestive enzymes.  The digestive enzymes are crucial in delivering key nutrients to your cells.
