Five Ways to Stick to Your Goals

By on March 13, 2015

We all have goals, and whether they are small or major, they are all important – if they weren’t, we wouldn’t make them in the first place. While it is quite easy to come up with goals in life, such as eating better, spending more time with the family, or losing weight, it is much harder to stick to them. If you want to make sure you stick to your goals for the future, these five tips will help.

Visualization Helps
You’ve likely heard that you need to visualize the things you want to accomplish in life, and this is very true. When you picture yourself achieving the goals you set, you will drastically up your chances of sticking to doing the things you need to do in order to reach them. If you have trouble visualizing things on your own, technology can be a major help. If you’re trying to lose weight, enlist the help of a photo editing program and create a thinner you – you’ll have a great idea of how amazing you’ll look if you continue to skip that extra slice of pie!

Break It Down

When most of us come up with goals, thinking about all of the steps involved with getting there can be overwhelming. Instead of setting a far-reaching goal like eating better, break it down. Make your goal to substitute one snack a day with healthy veggies, or if you want to lose weight, set a deadline for losing five pounds. Breaking your goals down into smaller, easier to handle chunks will help you reach those major milestones one step at a time.

Find a Buddy
When you’ve come up with a goal that you really want to reach, reach out to a friend. Choose a friend that you know can be tough, and ask them to keep you accountable for the steps you are taking to reach your goal. Set up weekly or monthly check-ins, and stick to them. When you have someone giving you that little extra push, it can make a world of difference. It’s easy to tell yourself that you’ll start doing something tomorrow, but when you have to explain yourself to someone else, it can seriously put things into a better perspective that will keep you motivated.

Take the Time to Look Back
Sticking with goals can sometimes become frustrating – especially if you slip up on occasion. When you start feeling as if you aren’t ever going to make it to where you want to be, reflect on the changes you have already made. When you see that you’ve already made serious accomplishments, it will jump start your positive thoughts.

Believe in Yourself
This is one of the best things you can do to reach your goals. If you actually believe that you will do what you want to accomplish, you are much more likely to get there. Negativity never helps, but it can be devastating when you want to reach a major goal. Think happy thoughts and have faith in the fact that you really can do what you set your mind to, no matter what happens.
