Common Mistakes to Avoid When Green Juicing

By on January 2, 2015

Whether trying to lose weight or just switching to a healthier lifestyle, many people take up green juicing to accomplish their goals. The healthy nutrients and incredible cleansing properties of green juice just can’t be rivaled. The problem is, many who are new to the green juicing world make a few common mistakes that prevent them from seeing the full benefits of their new health choice. The following are a few of these common mistakes so you can finally realize the true benefit of every glass of amazing green juice.

Too Much Sugar

One of the most common mistakes when it comes to green juicing is using too many fruits. While apples, kiwi, and other fruits tame the taste of the veggies in your juice, they also add a ton of sugar. Granted, these sugars are natural, unlike those seen in processed foods, but it acts the same way in the body. If you are trying to lose weight with green juices, adding all that sugar is going to limit the weight loss benefits.

Adjusting to the taste of green juices may be difficult, but to reap the rewards, you need to limit the amount of fruit you add – generally, no more than one in each serving of juice.

Not Enough Variety

If you’ve done any research on the benefits of juicing green vegetables, you’ve likely found a wealth of information on the benefits of adding kale, spinach, and celery. However, if you focus on including only these vegetables, you are making a serious mistake. While it is true that these veggies are high in nutrients, too much of them can cause health problems. Celery is high in potassium, and too much of it in the bloodstream can lead to hyperkalemia, which is a dangerous issue that can lead to heart problems and even heart attack. Too much spinach and kale can cause high levels of oxalic acid, which can disrupt normal hormone levels. When green juicing, you have to make sure you are using a variety of vegetables to ensure the best mix of nutrients.

Drinking Juice With Your Meals

When you are trying to lose weight, you should make sure that you are not drinking your juices with your meals, or within a short time of them. If you want to get the most benefit, drink your juices during the times you would normally have snacks throughout the day or start your day with a juice as breakfast. When eating your meals, stick with healthier choices like green teas and water so you keep yourself hydrated.

Forgetting to Chew

While it may seem strange, if you want to get the most benefit from green juicing, you need to chew when drinking them. Moving the juice around in your mouth helps it to mix with the enzymes in your saliva, which are important for the digestion process. These enzymes help to break down the nutrients in your juices, helping your body to get the most out of every delicious sip.
Green juicing provides a wealth of benefits, and if you avoid making these mistakes, you will reap as many as possible.
